Moving On : Lessons Learned #1

Work to Live.  Don't Live to Work.

The first time I heard this was when I worked for IDX (now GE Healthcare IT).  Some of us were discussing a certain coworker who worked some really ridiculous hours.  This was done on his own as he wasn't being pushed or asked to do so.  Nights.  Weekends.   He was crazy.  Someone said this and it has stuck in my head ever since... even if I haven't always lived up to it.

Going into this new job, I hope to try and obey this a bit more.  Knowing myself, I know that I'm going to bust my ass, learn everything I can, and spend some odd nights and a few hours here and there on the weekends to learn something or tweak things.  That's just me.  However, I don't think (and I hope) I don't let the job consume me like I, at times, like this last one.  When you have a Friday night where you can't concentrate on what your Fiance is saying at dinner because you are thinking about something at work... you need to take a hard look at what you are doing.

I will say that my employer saw this trait in my and did try a lot of break me of it.  But I think I've learned my lesson now.
